About

“Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.”
— Charles Dickens

I saw this quote in the Waterstones store in Milton Keynes. It’s probably one of the great openings of any book i’ve ever read, and it made me think about all the things I wanted to say or do to express myself and hopefully help others on their journey in life.

Reading that quote gave me the idea of this website. I wanted to have somewhere where I could speak openly and honestly about my life experiences and also share my thoughts and feelings. You see, as a British Asian man, its been drilled into me to keep my feelings and emotions to myself.

My culture and community discourage people to talk about their issues or feelings. It's still very much frowned upon, as is anyone who goes against the grain or the status quo.

So that, alongside being brought up in the inner city and around tough working class men who do not tolerate forms of weakness or emotion, its been drilled into me to repress everything emotional like a stereotypical Englishman and adapted the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' mentality that got us through 2 World Wars. Oh there have been moments that its seeped through, I remember once scoring an amazing goal at school where I brought the ball down on my left foot with a delicate chip and hit it on the volley into the top corner with my right. I was amazed and ecstatic about that goal as I was celebrating with my team, only for my PE teacher to come over, and make us run in the rain, then do combinations of press-ups, sit ups and squats for not taking sport seriously.

The name 'Wayfaring Stranger' came to me when I heard an old Johnny Cash song when I returned from my trip a few months ago. 'Wayfaring Stranger' means someone who is travelling on an unfamiliar path where they remain unknown to others (including family and friends). I found it represented how distant and disassociated I feel at times.

As a result, I will not declare my name or location to ensure those people I have in my life are protected. But also to ensure what I write is an honest reflection of that I think and experience.

So with that, this website will include the following:
- A weekly blog about what I'm up to.
- Bespoke pieces about a thought or an idea that I may want to share.

Thanks for visiting.

I hope life treats you well.
